You can track metics such as CPU, DiskSpeed, Memory etc for a production server over a period of time and then compare it after the upgrade. But trying to exactly simulate the production environoment in a test environoment, would be pretty difficuly. We run standard tests against a test server using server load, upgrade the server, and then run the same tests again. Helps us antipicate what would happen in production.
